Personal Cameras and Self-Service Scanning in the Reading Room at TARC

Tufts Archival Research Center welcomes both the use of personal digital cameras and the use of our Reading Room scanners for copying documents in our Reading Room subject to the following policy:

All visitors who wish to use their digital cameras or our self-service photocopier/scanner to reproduce TARC materials must notify staff each time they intend to use our self-service scanners in the Reading Room, and must identify the materials being duplicated.

Users agree to the following conditions:

  1. Our material must be handled with care as described in the Reading Room Policy. In addition:
  • The preservation needs of the material outweigh the technical limitations of the camera or copier/scanner.
  • Material may be reproduced from one folder at a time.
  • Material must remain flat on the desk or in the stand/cradle provided.
  • Users may not push on bindings, stand on table/chairs, or hold up materials in order to obtain a better quality picture.
  • Flash photography is prohibited. Please speak to staff before using a tripod.
  1. Reproductions created by users are intended for personal reference use and research purposes.
  • TARC welcomes you to use materials in our collections that are in the public domain and to make fair use of materials as defined by copyright law. This document and/or the provision of a reproduction are not a copyright permission, license, or transfer of rights.
  • Users who require images for publication and broadcast should contact TARC.
  1. The user accepts full responsibility for determining whether or not U.S. copyright law protects the material being reproduced and whether or not his or her use exceeds the limits of fair use, as described by the terms below.
  1. The researcher will adhere to any and all of the restrictions that govern the research use of a specific collection.
  1. Photography of other researchers or staff is prohibited.
  1. TARC reserves the right to prohibit the reproduction of any of its collections.
